Man Overboard: Inside the Honeymoon Cruise Murder by Joan Lownds

Man Overboard tells the inside story of one of America’s most notorious murder cases in decades, providing unprecedented insight into the death of Greenwich native George Allen Smith IV on his honeymoon. He married Jennifer Hagel in June 2005. Both of them were young and beautiful. He came from an old-line Greenwich family; she, from blue-collar Cromwell and with a reputation for being a flirt. Just eight days after their wedding, their new life together disintegrated on their Royal Caribbean honeymoon cruise. The morning after several booze-fueled melees, a gruesome blood stain traced the awning below their cabin, and George had vanished.
After four years of bitter legal wrangling with both families, Royal Caribbean recently handed over its files to the FBI, which announced that Smith’s murder is “very active and open.” Man Overboard provides an extraordinary look into a case that has captured the public imagination and raised provocative questions about the unregulated cruise industry, leading directly to the historic Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act signed by President Obama.

Unreasonable Doubt: Circumstantial Evidence and an Ordinary Murder in New Haven by Norma Thompson

In 2001, Norma Thompson served on the jury in a murder trial in New Haven, Connecticut. In Unreasonable Doubt, Thompson dramatically depicts the jury's deliberations, which ended in a deadlock. As foreperson, she pondered the behavior of some of her fellow jurors that led to the trial's termination in a hung jury. Blending personal memoir, social analysis, and literary criticism, she addresses the evasion of judgment she witnessed during deliberations and relates that evasion to contemporary political, social, and legal affairs. She then assembles an imaginary jury of Alexis de Tocqueville, Plato, and Jane Austen, among others, to show how the writings of these authors can help model responsible habits of deliberation.
Norma Thompson is senior lecturer in humanities and associate director of the Whitney Humanities Center at Yale University. She is the author most recently of The Ship of State: Statecraft and Politics from Ancient Greece to Democratic America.

Dear Dawn: Aileen Wuornos in Her Own Words by Aileen Wuornos, Lisa Kester, Daphne Gottlieb and Phyllis Chesler

Between 1989 and 1990, Aileen Wuornos, a hitchhiking prostitute, shot, killed, and robbed seven men in remote Florida locations. Arrested in 1991, Wuornos insisted she had acted in self-defense, but the jury had little sympathy. Condemned to death on six separate counts, she was executed by lethal injection in 2002.
An abused runaway who turned to prostitution to survive, Wuornos has become iconic of vengeful women who lash out at the nearest target. She has also become a touchstone for women’s, prostitutes’, and prisoners’ rights advocates. Her story has inspired myriad books and articles, as well as the 2003 movie Monster, for which Charlize Theron won an Academy Award. But until now, Wuornos’s uncensored voice has never been heard.
Dear Dawn is Wuornos’s autobiography culled from her ten-year death row correspondence with beloved childhood friend Dawn Botkins. Authorized for publication by Wuornos and edited under the guidance of Botkins, the letters not only offer Wuornos’s riveting reflections on the murders, legal battles, and media coverage, but go further, revealing her fears and obsessions, her rich humor and empathy, and her gradual disintegration as her execution approached. A candid life story told to a trusted friend, Dear Dawn is a compelling narrative, unwaveringly true to its source

The Dating Game Killer: The True Story of a TV Dating Show, a Violent Sociopath, and a Series of Brutal Murders by Stella Sands

Rodney James Alcala (born August 23, 1943) is a convicted rapist and serial killer. He was sentenced to death in California in 2010 for five murders committed in that state between 1977 and 1979,and is currently under indictment for two additional homicides in New York.He is thought to be responsible for other violent crimes as well.Alcala is also notable for exceptional demonstrations of cruelty: prosecutors say he "toyed" with his victims, strangling them until they lost consciousness, then waiting until they revived, sometimes repeating this process several times before finally killing them.
He is sometimes labeled the "Dating Game Killer" because of his appearance on the American television show The Dating Game in the very midst of his murder spree.

Police have found a collection of more than one thousand photographs taken by Alcala, mostly of women and teenaged boys, most of them in sexually explicit poses. They speculate that some of his photographic subjects could be additional victims. One police detective called him "a killing machine",and criminalists have compared him to Ted Bundy.A homicide investigator familiar with the evidence speculated that Alcala could have murdered as many as 50 women, while other estimates have run as high as 130.

Love You Madly: The True Story of a Small-town Girl, the Young Men She Seduced, and the Murder of her Mother by Michael Fleeman

She posted it online: “Just to let everyone know, my mother was murdered.” But those simple words written by sixteen-year-old Rachelle Waterman couldn’t begin to describe the horror of the crime: Her mother’s body locked in a van. Doused in gasoline. Burned beyond recognition…
Alaska troopers arrested two young men—both of whom had dated Rachelle and claimed to still love her. Investigators grilled Rachelle until she made shocking and apparently incriminating revelations…
Was this obviously intelligent young woman really an abused child coerced by police—or a deceptive murderess? The answer may lie in Rachelle’s Internet journal, a disturbing glimpse into a troubled girl’s mind. Did she convince her lovers to kill for her? That is the question at the heart of this shocking true story of madness, manipulation, and matricide.

The Devil's Right Hand: The Tragic Story of the Colt Family Curse by M. William Phelps

The epic story of a great American dynasty, beset by scandal, tragedy, and a dark curse
From the author of The Devil's Rooming House comes the horrific legacy of death and destruction in the gunmaking Colt family during the nineteenth century, a legacy largely remembered for a lurid murder case that inspired Edgar Allan Poe’s story “The Oblong Box”—but one that encompassed so much more. . . .M. William Phelps reveals an unfathomable pattern surrounding repeating arms inventor Samuel Colt—from the death of all the Colt children, including Sam’s sea captain son’s mysterious demise aboard his yacht, to the eccentric and pious life of Sam Colt’s widow. But the tip of this iceberg was the 1841-42 murder case of John C. Colt, one of New York’s most sensational scandals. Printer Samuel Adams went to collect a debt from bookkeeper and author John Colt and was never seen alive again. Shocking revelations followed: Did John shoot Adams with one of his brother’s Colt firearms before hacking him up and packing him in an oblong box? Did Sam Colt invent the revolving pistol, or steal the idea?Part historical true-crime, part family biography and cultural history, The Devil’s Right Hand is a stirring narrative about a darkly cursed American dynasty

The Millionaire's Wife: The True Story of a Real Estate Tycoon, his Beautiful Young Mistress, and a Marriage that Ended in Murder by Cathy Scott

On a rainy morning in the fall of 1990, a gunman, in broad daylight, caught up with George Kogan as George walked home from a Manhattan Upper East Side market. The shooter pumped three slugs into his back. Seven hours later, George was dead.

From the start, the prime suspect was the estranged wife of George Kogan, because, in part, George had $4 million worth of insurance on his life, and Barbara was the beneficiary. Yet, it would take nearly two decades to solve the murder. George, who had turned 49 the month before the killing, was gunned down as he approached the lobby doors of his East 69th Street apartment building, where he lived with his young girlfriend.

Manuel Martinez, an attorney with a small law practice who mostly handled eviction cases, once represented Barbara and eventually was charged and convicted of hiring a hit man to kill Barbara’s husband. It's a love triangle and a hit-for-hire.

Portrait of a Monster: Joran van der Sloot, a Murder in Peru, and the Natalee Holloway Mystery by Lisa Pulitzer and Cole Thompson

From a pair of New York Times bestselling authors with unparalleled access comes an in-depth account of the manhunt for Joran van der Sloot, one of the most reviled accused criminals in the world
In May 2005, Natalee Holloway disappeared from a high school trip to Aruba. Five years to the day later, twenty-one-year-old Stephany Flores was reported missing in Lima, Peru. Implicated in both crimes was one young man: Joran van der Sloot.
A twenty-three-year-old Dutchman, Van der Sloot has become the subject of intense scrutiny by the media and the public in the years since 2005. He was arrested and detained by Aruban authorities in connection with the Holloway disappearance, only to be released after questioning. In 2008, during a Dutch sting operation, he admitted to being present for Holloway’s death---but later recanted his statement.
In 2010, on the five-year anniversary of her disappearance, a young business student in Peru named Stephany Flores disappeared, only to be found dead three days later in a hotel room---registered to Van der Sloot. He was arrested for the murder and confessed, but he later claimed he was coerced.
This is the first book to offer a probing look at the man tied to two of the most sensational cases of the decade. It draws from:
• Interviews with members of the families of Joran, Stephany, and Natalee
• Never-before-seen photographs of the crime scene in Peru, fingerprint files, hotel records, and more
• Internal communications between Interpol, the FBI, Aruban officials, and officials in Chile and Peru

Black Widow: The True Story How of Dena Thompson Lured Men Into a Twisted Web of Sex, Lies and Murder by Adrian Gatton

Dena Thompson is a woman who has relished exercising a very dangerous kind of power over men. She has been dubbed a psychopath who, for over twenty years, succeeded in duping everyone - including the police - with her bizarre and totally convincing stories. The petite blonde used Lonely Hearts columns to lure a succession of husbands and dozens of lovers into her life, ultimately leaving them financially destitute, physically battered or emotionally broken. Take her first husband, Lee Wyatt, who for Dena was nothing more than a puppet. He ended up a lonely fugitive on the run after she convinced him that the mafia were out to get him. Once Lee was out of the picture, she bigamously wed advertising salesman Julian Webb - within three years, he was dead from an unexplained drug overdose. Third husband Richard Thompson suffered a brutal attack with a baseball bat, but arch-manipulator Dena convinced the jury at the trial that she was the victim. Her kaleidoscopic deceptions created mayhem and sent police on wild goose chases that would take the spotlight off her. But she could not escape the suspicion of the relatives of her victims who began to piece together the fragments of her evil deeds and were eventually able to bring her down. In this fascinating and in-depth book, Adrian Gatton - producer of the Channel 4 documentary Black Widow about Dena Thompson - opens up his case files to go on the trail of this twisted love story, tracing Dena's development from a bright, charming schoolgirl from north London, into a manipulative psychopath.

  1. See also my new book published Nov 2011 about the unsolved murder of Florence Nightingale Shore, a decorated army nurse and god-daughter of Florence Nightingale. She was found with serious head injuries in an empty carriage on the London to Hastings train in January 1920, and died four days later. No-one was ever charged with her murder, in spite of the involvement of Scotland Yard and the famous pathologist Dr Bernard Spilsbury. An American relative of the family by marriage came up with a new theory recently - a horrifying and bizarre idea that is explored in detail in the book. See it on Amazon at http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=The+Nightingale+Shore+Murder
